    The Proxy Wars

    This is my timeline for the Proxy Wars Assignment.
  • The UN Combats the North Koreans

    While the North Koreans were invading South Korea, the UN developed a force of 15 nations strong, in which the US and Great Britain were apart of to stop the invasion. Led under General Douglas MacArthur, the resistance had caused half of the North Korean invaders to surrender, while the rest retreated.
  • China gets involved with North Korea

    While the UN forces, mainly from the US, had pushed back the North Koreans to their own border with China. China was scared. These had sent 300,000 troops to fight the UN in response. General Douglas MacArthur called for nuclear action, President Truman rejected it. When he tried again at congress, President Truman repealed his duties.
  • North Korea invades South Korea

    During this year, North Korea had gone and invaded South Korea with supplies from the Soviet Union. They had gone deep into the south leaving South Korea only with the land around the area of Pusan. The U.N. had made a desicion to defend South Korea from the invaders.
  • French and Vietnamese Tensions

    French controlled most of Southeast Asia at the time, including Vietnam. Vietnamese people seeked independance and turned to communism to retrive it. Thier leader Ho Chi Minh believed that they should gain their territory and revolt against the French. They did so and the French Armies had suffered major losses, and soon surrendered.
  • The US Supports France in Vietnam

    The US had begun to stand with the French in their fight to regain control of Vietnam. They had feared the rise of communism in Asia, and President Eisenhower described this as the "Domino Theory" in which if one nation fell the communism, the rest near it would as well. This theory had became a major justification for the US in the Cold War.
  • US Involvment in Vietnam

    The US had been greatly involved in Vietnam with over 500,000 troops in the area. They had fought a hard war with the north gaining supplies from other communist countries like China and the Soviet Union. They had then withdrawn from the area and resulted in effective air attacks. The communists had won over the country in 1975 after many hard years fought.
  • The Soviet Union Gets Involved in Afghanistan

    The Soviet Union had been concerened that one of it's communist allies, Afghanistan, was in danger of a revolt taking down the communist rule. The "Holy Warriors" known as the "Mujaideen" were fighting off the Soviet forces while they were supplied by the US.
  • Soviet Troops Withdraw from Afghanistan

    A new president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, had seen the devestating consequences of the war. He had withdrew all Soviet troops from the region by 1989. This was a new step, a communist government understanding its' wrong doings, and making them right.
  • The US Boycotts the Soviet Union

    The US had boycotted the Soviet Union in thier support to the commnist powers in Afghanistan. They had stopped the supply of grain to the nation, and also were against the olympics that were to be held there.
  • The Taliban is Born

    A group known as the "Taliban". This was a violent, harmful, sexist, so called "leadership" which had taken rule in 1996. They had caused the start of terrorism in today's world. They had murdered innocent people, not allowed women to freely live, and had done as much damage to humanity as possible.
  • The Wars Qualify as Proxy Wars

    The following wars in this timeline qualify as Proxy Wars due to the initiated conflict by a major superpower, who remained indirect throughout the fight.
  • What is a Proxy War?

    A Proxy War, is all of these wars. They were wars initiated by a major power, which did not directly become involved in the conflict. Countries such as the Soviet Union.
