Roosevelt's wife Alice Hathaway Lee died two days after their child's birth. Her pregnancy had hid her illness and kidney failure. His mother died on the same day of Typhoid Fever in the same house. After these deaths Roosevelt sent the newborn to live with his sister and drew an X on his diary page, writing "The light has gone out of my life."
