The Christian Brothers are a Catholic religious congregation of lay men, founded in the city of Waterford, Ireland, by Edmund Ignatius Rice in 1802. Edmund Rice was forty years of age when he founded his congregation in response to the needs of the children of his own city and indeed the whole of Ireland.

Brother Patrick Ambrose Treacy was born Thurles County, Ireland on the 31 August 1834 and died 2 October 1912. He was a Roman Catholic who established the first permanent Christian Brothers Community in Autralia in 1868.

The Christian Brothers first came to Australia in Sydney in 1843 at the invitation of Archbisop Pollding, however in 1848 the Brothers returned to Ireland due to misunderstandings.
They returned to Australia and arrived in Melbourne in 1868 at the invitation o f Bishop James Goold. -
Within 35 years of coming to Australia Brother Patrick Ambros Treacy had responded to invitations to various bishops to establish schools in the dioceses of brisbane,sydney, dunedian and perth. There main task was the evangelisation of the mainly poor irish catholic families
