    Arms Race

    a race between the the US and the Soviet Union to arm their countries with nuclear weapons and warheads. Began when Joseph Stalin was officially informed of the Manhattan project at the potsdam conference. With the arms race came MAD (mutually Assured Destruction, if one nuclear armed country attacks another they both blow the other out of existence). The race started slowing down as it took a heavy toll on both sides developing weapons. Effectivly ending when the Soviet Union started breaking.

  • The Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine
    Truman's relations among the nations policy. Can be considered the start of the Cold War. The doctrine won support from the Republican run Congress and spent $400 million in USD, military force was exempt. It was an attempt to put an end to the threat of communism taking over Greece and Turkey.

    Marshall Plan
    US program to aid European economies after the second world war. Was an attempt tp prevent the spread of Soviet Communism. Goals of the plan were simple rebuild regions devastated by war, remove trade barriers, make Europe prosperous again, and modernize industry.

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO for short was created for intergovernmental peace, an agreement among the members to have a mutual defense response if another member country was attacked. 70% of the world's defence spending is from the memebers of this organization.

    War between the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic people's republic of Korea (North Korea). Mainly started because of the difference between the governments. Control of certain parts of each country shifted sometimes constantly during the war till it ended in an Armistice and created the 38th parallel.

    War started in the fear of the domino effect as the United States knew that a Communist power was attempting to take control of Vietnam. The Vietnam war brought along a lot of new ways to deal with people in war such as dropping napalm on the populace (napalm was a very powerful chemical that would burn peoples' skin constantly with excrutiating results). The war was fiercly fought between the two sides what with the geurilla tactics used and the hinderence of excessive drug use among the US men

    The Vietcong ultimately won and the US was forced to pull out from Vietnam allowing it to become a communist state.

    Effectivly began with the launch of the Russian sattelite Sputnik I. The first human in space was a Russian man named Yuri Gagarin however the people to land on the moon were Americans named Buz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. The race met a detente when Nixon and Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev and the space race calmed down a bit.

    A very unsuccessful attack by the United States using trained Cuban exiles in an attempt to help overthrow Castro and "free" Cuba of its despotism/cummunistic rule.

    Russia was supplying nuclear missiles to Cuba that could reach the US in minutes. JFK didnt quite agree and so imployed Brinkmanship (going to the brink of war to get your point across) to intimidate enough that the Russians to take away Cuba's missiles
