    He married Elizabeth of Valois (daughter of Henry II of France). The marriage was the result of the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis (1559), which, for a generation, ended the open wars between Spain and France. Elizabeth had two daughters Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566–1633) and Catherine Micaela (1567–1597).

    The Morisco Revolt broke out in the southern province of Granada in defiance of attempts to suppress Moorish customs.
