Phillip was the son of the Holy Roman emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. Charles declared in 1543 that when ever he himself was traveling then Phillip was in charge. Phillip traveled all over to, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands

Phillip was married four times, the first time he married was to his cousin Maria of Portugal in 1543. She died two years later giving birth to their son, Don Carlos.

Elizabeth bore Philip two daughters, Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566–1633) and Catherine Micaela (1567–97). Elizabeth died in 1568,
