    Peirce was one of 4 sons to Sarah Mills and Benjamin Peirce in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Early childhood was an easy headstart to education due to the fact that his father, Benjamin Peirce, was a professor of astronomy and mathematics at Harvard University.

    Peirce attended Harvard University following in his father's footsteps. He studied science and chemistry and graduated Harvard in 1859 and received a bachelors degree in chemistry in 1863. Charles was a low grade student, usually the bottom third in his class.
