    He was assassinated when a mass in the chapel of the Divine Providence Hospital in Colonia Miramonte San Salvador. A shot fired by a sniper hit his heart, just before Holy Consecration. When he was killed, was 62 years old. His remains rest in the crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador.His death sparked the beginning of the civil war in El Salvador.
