Liesel wet the bed, and so Papa read her book to her. They then work on words she doesn't know. As she works on her ability to read.

Liesel is at a book burning, in honor of Hitler's birthday. Things happen, and she ends up stealing another book. On top of that, she also gets caught.

We get more of Max, a Jew in hiding. He later leaves the basement he's in, and venture's out to find Hans. Causing him to meet up with Liesel.

Max(the Jew), made his way to the Hubermanns house. After they accept him in, things get more interesting.

Liesel is given another book for her birthday, while Max has his hands in his pockets uncomfortably. He would have gotten her something if he'd known. A bit of silence follows, and Liesel hugs Max. Building their was slow relationship, farther.

Max makes a short little book about his life. Liesel finds it, and learns more about Max's life. The hard life of a jew.

Liesel had been stealing books, but Ilsa Hermann did nothing about it. She told Liesel this in a letter, and gives her a dictionary and a thesaurus. With Liesel, later being given a pencil and paper to write.

The war breaks out, Hans is sent away, and bombings happen on occurrence. Things on Himmel street start becoming more and more like Hell, for eveyone.
