Vladeck tells his story before the war. As a young man, he is in a relationship with a girl named Lucia when he meets Anja, his future wife.

Vladeck starts his textile factory and Anja has Richieu with him.

Anja gets a severe case of depression, and Vladeck and her go to a sanitarium to recover.

When they return from the Sanitarium, Vladeck learns his factory has been robbed. His in-laws help him build a new one.

Vladeck is called to the Polish army.

Vladeck is taken prisoner during a skirmish. He is taken to several camps until he is finally released.

Vladeck and his family are taken to a ghetto. His father, sister and her kids are taken to camps.

Vladeck and Anja hide to avoid being sent to camps but are found. In dention in Srodula, Vladecks cousin helps them escape and find work.

The Jews are moved Sodrula and forced to work in the shops and factories. Vladeck sends Richieu to live with relatives. Richeu is then poisened by his aunt to avoid being killed at camps.

The Germans take over Sighet, They call for a deportation of the Jews.

Wiesel and his family are taken from their home and forced to live in a ghetto. They are then taken to a train station

Journey to Auschwitz. It took five days to get there. Upon arrival, Wiesel and his father were separated from the women. It would be the last time Wiesel saw his mother and younger sister.

Wiesel and his father are sent to Buna.

Wiesel witnesses several hangings. He witnessed the hanging of a young pipel and that affected how Wiesel viewed God enormously.

The Russian front is within distance of liberating Auschwitz. The S.S. decide to evacuate Auschwitz, taking the prisoners.

Death march to Gleiwitz. Wiesel and the other prisoners marched almost 80 miles to Gleiwitz.They stayed at Gleiwitz for 3 days with no food or drink.

Vladeck and Anja hide with a Polish women. Smugglers tell them that they can take them to Hungary. Vladeck and Anja pay them, but the smugglers betray them to the Nazis. They are taken to Aushwitz and are seperated.

Anja and Vladeck figure out ways to communicate between camps. He earns enough money to transfer Anja to Aushwitz but then he is transferred to Birkenue to take apart gas chambers. Vladeck and other prisoners are taken to Switzerland.

Death of his father. When Wiesel and his father arrived at Buchenwald, his father pretty much gave up. He came down with dysentery. Sadly, an S.S. guard struck Wiesel's father and they sent him to the crematory.

Journey to Buchenwald. They rode in a roofless cattle car to Buchenwald. The trip itself took nearly ten days and they lived off eating snow. Wiesel thought he wasn't going to make it because it was bitter cold and wind cut them like whip.

The liberation. Wiesel was liberated by the American troops in April 1945.

After escaping the Germans, Vladeck is free living in a swiss farm house with his frine Shivek.
