    Birth
Born Niels Henrik David Bohr in Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Schooling

    Schooling
Bohr at the age of 26 attended Copenhagen University, where he receive his Master's and Doctorate in physics. He then traveled to Cambridge, England to follow the Cavendish Laboratory work of J.J. Thomson.
  • Atomic Model

    Atomic Model
Bohr proposed a quantized shell of the atom, explaining how electrons can have stable orbits around the nucleus. With the Rutherford model Bohr thought the motion of the electrons were unstable, because any charged particle moving on a curved path emits electromagnetic radiation, causing the electrons to lose energy and spiral into the nucleus. He remedied the stability problem by modifying the Rutherford model by requiring that electrons move in orbits of fixed size and energy.
  • Bohr Model

    Bohr Model
Bohr's atomic model showed the atom as a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons. He was the first person to discover that electrons travel in separate orbits around the nucleus, and that the number of electrons in the outer orbit determine the properties of an element.
  • Bohr Model

    Bohr Model
With the model, Bohr explains how electrons jump from one orbit to another only by emitting or absorbing energy in fixed quanta. For example, if an electron jumps one orbit closer to the nucleus, it must emit energy equal to the difference in energies of the two orbits. So, when the electron jumps to a larger orbit, it must absorb a quantum light equal in energy to the difference in orbits.
  • Bohr's Starting Point

    Bohr's Starting Point
Bohr needed to realize that classical mechanics on their own could not explain the stability of an atom. As a stable atom has a certain size so that any equation describing it must contain some fundamental constant or combination of constants with a dimension of length. The charges and the masses of the electron and nucleus cannot be combined to length. When Bohr noticed that the quantum constant made by physicist Max Planck combined with the mass and charge of the electron produced length.
  • Nobel Prize

    Nobel Prize
Bohr won the Physics Nobel Prize for his discoveries of the electron and radioactivity leading to different models of the atom structure. Nobel Prize Motivation: "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them."
  • Death

    Death
Died of Congestive heart failure in Carlsberg, Copenhagen, Denmark.
