Avram Noam Chomsky was born on December 7, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 1945, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. After two years, he pondered quitting school to pursue his political aspirations, possibly by relocating to a kibbutz. However, he altered his opinion after meeting Zellig S. Harris, a linguist and one of the American inventors of structural linguistics, who shared Chomsky's political beliefs.

He got married to linguist Carol Schatz in 1949. They had a boy named Harry as well as two daughters named Aviva and Diane.

He received his linguistics bachelor's degree in 1949, master's degree in 1951, and doctorate in 1955.
