A bet was made on whether or not all of a horse's hooves are touching the ground when it runs. Eadweard Muybridge recorded a running horse using multiple cameras that would capture many images of the horse as it passed by. These images were then viewed in a special machine that showed the images together, making the first film.

A French man named Louis Augustin Le Prince created the first camera that could record multiple images onto a film. The camera used a paper film to record the images. Le Prince would go on to make multiple short films using this camera.

Thomas Edison created the Kinetoscope, a machine which allowed the user to see film. Only one person could view the film however.

Charles Francis Jenkins created the first colored motion picture when he recorded a woman dancing. He then colored each frame by hand. Colored films would not be normal for another 5 decades. (I could not find images of Jenkin's colored film)

The Chronograph was an invention by Leon Gaumont which allowed sound to be synced with a movie, meaning people could watch films with sound. It worked by using electric cables to match the film with the disk player.

When Thomas Edison tried to take over the movie industry by taking out anyone who did not follow his rules, people moved to the other side of the country where Edison could not catch them. This place was Hollywood, California. Here, people could freely make movies and actors would be credited for films they were in.

In 1956 movies started being broadcasted over the television, which had come out in the same decade. People could now enjoy films at home and not have to go to theatres. The first movie broadcasted on the television was The Wizard of Oz.

Some movies were too violent or showed mature content so a new rating system was made to help not expose mature content to younger audiences. This is why we have ratings such as M for mature or E for everyone.

CGI stands for Computer Generated Imagery. Movie producers used CGI to create things that weren't on set. For example, many transformers movies use CGI to animate the robot models.
