When Katniss and her family were on the verge of starvation, she was once caught digging through the Mellark's garbage cans by Mrs. Mellark. Peeta then purposely burns a loaf of bread, to give to Katniss, as no one else would buy burnt bread. This small offering gives Katniss new hope and the will to keep on going. -

When Katniss was about to leave to the Capitol for the 74th Hunger Games, Mr. Mellark came in to say goodbye to her. He gave Katniss cookies, which she later threw away, and promised her that he would feed Katniss' sister in her absence. -
Madge Undersee gives Katniss her Mockingjay Pin
As Katniss is about to leave District 12 for the Hunger Games, Madge Undersee, the mayor's daughter, gives Katniss her Mockingjay pin. This little pin, which Katniss wore during the Hunger Games, gave her great hope and courage. It helped Katniss not give up and fight in the games. -

Cinna specifically chose Katniss from District 12, which was unusual because of the district's low standards. Cinna wanted Katniss to be remembered, and she definitely was, as Cinna gave her the title "The Girl on Fire" as her opening dress was on fire. Cinna helped her receive great appraisal from the fans and sponsors, which helped her in the games. -

The judges from the training center gave Katniss the best score of 11, and made Katniss even more famous in the Capitol. With getting this score, she is likely of getting more sponsors than the other tributes. -
Rue Saves Katniss
Katniss awakes to the sound of the Careers walking by, who later chase her up a tree. As Cato begins climbing after her, Katniss see Rue, sitting in a neighboring tree, and pointing to a tracker jacker nest above Katniss. Katniss cuts it down and by saving herself from the enemy tributes, created an alliance with Rue. -
Thresh Saves Katniss
On her way to the feast, Katniss was attacked by Clove, but right before Clove was going cut Katniss' face, Clove was picked up by the neck via Thresh. Thresh didn't kill Katniss though because of her alliance with Rue, as Rue and Thresh were from the same District. -
Peeta Helps Katniss
During the entire novel, all Peeta wishes to do is to help Katniss stay alive. Due to his great love for her, Peeta helped keep Katniss alive by mainly joining as allies in the games. Peeta always wanted to be with Katniss and didn't want her to go out alone in fear of her dying.
