    When Katniss and her family were on the verge of starvation, she was once caught digging through the Mellark's garbage cans by Mrs. Mellark. Peeta then purposely burns a loaf of bread, to give to Katniss, as no one else would buy burnt bread. This small offering gives Katniss new hope and the will to keep on going.

  • Gale Befreinds Katniss

    Katniss and Gale met in the woods outside of District 12. There, Gale taught Katniss a new way of catching wild animals, by using snares. Most importantly, though, Gale was Katniss's one true friend in District 12.
  • Mr. Mellark Promises Katniss

    When Katniss was about to leave to the Capitol for the 74th Hunger Games, Mr. Mellark came in to say goodbye to her. He gave Katniss cookies, which she later threw away, and promised her that he would feed Katniss' sister in her absence.

    As Katniss is about to leave District 12 for the Hunger Games, Madge Undersee, the mayor's daughter, gives Katniss her Mockingjay pin. This little pin, which Katniss wore during the Hunger Games, gave her great hope and courage. It helped Katniss not give up and fight in the games.

    Katniss awakes to the sound of the Careers walking by, who later chase her up a tree. As Cato begins climbing after her, Katniss see Rue, sitting in a neighboring tree, and pointing to a tracker jacker nest above Katniss. Katniss cuts it down and by saving herself from the enemy tributes, created an alliance with Rue.

    On her way to the feast, Katniss was attacked by Clove, but right before Clove was going cut Katniss' face, Clove was picked up by the neck via Thresh. Thresh didn't kill Katniss though because of her alliance with Rue, as Rue and Thresh were from the same District.
