The eight and last leader of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev did not step down until the Soviet Union had been crumbled. He was neither in nor out of favor for the Union however the conflicts surrounding it and its independence led to a decline in his economy. He provided more freedoms and reforms to the Soviet people with his policies of glasnost and perestroika (openness and restructure). -
