Misty Copeland was born in Kansas City, MO and four of her six siblings. She is also the first African-American dancer to become a female principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT)

Misty started taking ballet classes when she was 13 which is a late start for a serious dance career at the Boys and Girls Club taught by Cynthia Bradley but then eventually went to San Pedro Ballet School.

When she was 15, Misty won first place at the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards, in the ballet category. After that, San Francisco Ballet gave her a scholarship into the intensive summer program and she accepted it.
