Born in Riga, Latvia on January 27, 1948

Mikhail became very interested in dance around the same time that his mother had committed suicide. When he was 16 he began to train choreographer Alexander Pushkins at Vaganova Choreographic Institute.

Received his first major honour in Varna, Bulgaria in a dance competition.
