On this day in 1547, Miguel de Cervantes is baptized in Alcala de Heraves, Spain, a university town near Madrid. Cervantes, the fouth son of a deaf apothecary,studied with Madrid humanist Juan Lopez before traveling to Rome, where he worked for a future cardinal in the late 1560s.

In 1569,Cervantes moved to Ital, where he served as a valet to Guilio Acquaviva,a wealthy priest who was elevated to cardinal the next year.

In 1570 Cervantes joined the Spanish forces at Naples, Italy. As a soldier he witnessed the naval victory at the Gulf of Lepanto in Greece in 1571. He was wounded twice in the chest and once in the left hand. Cervantes often mentioned this victory in his works. He saw battle action from 1572 through 1574.
