Miguel de Cervantes was born on the 29th of September, 1547.

In 1569, it is believed that Miguel moved to Rome, and worked for Guilio Acquaviva as a valet.

Evidence suggests that Cervantes enlisted in the military in 1570, but the exact date is unknown.

In 1570, the ship that Cervantes was stationed on was captured by a squadron of Ottoman Pirates. He was then kept prisoner for the next five years.

In July of 1579, Miguel's mother gave 250 ducats to a couple of trinitarian monks, who were sent to pay the ransom. They arrived on May 29th, and took till September 19th for them to negotiate a deal for Cervantes' freedom.
