He was incharge of his little brother and paying for food. Although this took away from his dream he still Did it cause he couldent just leave.

    Thomas Jefferson had been running in the campaign for president hoping to get elected. So finally he got elected. This meant he had more money from the government. To send people over to the west to explore.

    After Jefferson was elected as president in early February, he looked for people to work with him. So he looked for his friend Lewis. He wrote Lewis a letter inviting him on this expedition. In this letter Jefferson refers to Lewis's "knowledge of the western country."

    When Lewis and Jefferon met again, Jefferson mentioned the expidition to him. Jefferson wanted him to not only help but lead the expidition! Lewis was unsure at first, but he made his decicion.

    Lewis would go on the expidition but he wanted Clark to go with him. So he wrote him a letter letting him know that he was doing the and he wanted him to not only go but be the co-leader. Clark was unsure at first but he decided he would go.

    After Clark agreed to go on the explration they started packing. In may they left for thier journey to the West. They started in the St. Louis area and went up stream on the Mississippi river. While on the journey they took many notes and drawings of what they saw.

    In September they returned to St. Louis safe. Although they had many problems and a long time they survived. They showed and told Jefferson what they experienced and who they met and saw. Jefferson was able to say that it is safe out there, its just different than what they are used to.

    After there long journey to the west and back they settled down. But in March Lewis was named the Govenor of the Upper Lower Louisiana Territory. A couple years after Lewis was done being Govenor, Clark became the new Govener

    On October 11,1809 Lewis died in Hohenwald Tennessee. He was staying at hotel and while he was sleeping and someone broke in and shot him in the head. Shortly after that he died. Some people today believed that he comitted suicide.
