Men's Apparel 1920-1970

  • 1920s

    1920s
The Jazz Age called for a new life, as post-war optimism was reflected in everything from clothing to music. Suits were simpler and slimmer, and brighter. The 1920's is my favorite decade and Men's fashion during this time were classy, sophisticated and rich. You can definitely distinguish upper and lower class in the way they dressed during this decade. Dressing to the nines was prominent in this decade.

    1930s
The 1930's shifted as quick as the economy crashed. The Great Depression caused fabric rationing and cutbacks in clothing production. This resulted in a situation where me learned to maintain style while conserving materials and cutting expenses. Men’s fashion of the time were dark and neutral colors, as bright colors were viewed as distasteful due to the hard times everyone was facing.

    1940s
1940s limited the freedom of fashion for men. Suits were made without vests, pocket flaps, and trouser cuffs. If you were seen with flashy clothing it was offensive and anti-patriotic, fabric was strictly rationed for those in uniform. However, men did begin expressing themselves in the details, in colors, prints, and accessories. Ties were a great way for them to do this.

    1950s
Post-War 50's fashion became a bit more leisurely. Travel began to boom, as well as an interest in sports. Fashion adapted with these interests, and casual, athletic attire. Pastel and casual polo shirts were the move. All men looked the same, typical American man. Youth men did not follow this trend and created the "Greaser" look, fitted white tee and leather was their go-to look.
  • 1960s

    1960s
The 1960's were a revolutionary period in Men's fashion. The men became more colorful and floral. British style and culture influenced them a lot. If the Beatles wore it, then it was a staple in the 1960's. Research says "The ’60s were considered “youth-driven,” with trends set by subcultures: mod, rocker, hippie, etc. and fashion, as a result, was as bold as it was lighthearted."
  • 1970s

    1970s
The 1970's were a crazy and colorful time for Men's fashion. Platform shoes and bell bottom trousers were menswear staples. Leisure suits and tracksuits were also popular!!! WOW! How groovy...they would have never thought to wear this decades prior now would they?
