Gubler was born on March 9, 1980, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The son of Marilyn who was a rancher and political consultant, and John Gubler, an attorney.

Gubler attended the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts and majored in dram. He excelled at acting and starred in many plays at the prestigious school that is also the alma mater of R&B star Ne-Yo and actress Rutina Wesley.

While in school Gubler got signed with some modeling agencies. Eventually leading to shoots with Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, and American Eagle.

After his minor role as intern #1 he was asked to audition for Criminal Minds. He landed his starring role as Dr. Spencer Reid. This is his most well known role. The show is still on air. -

While making The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Gubler made a documentary titled Matthew Gray Gubler's Life Aquatic Intern Journal, a behind-the-scenes view of the making of the film. He has directed and starred in a series of self-deprecating mockumentaries named Matthew Gray Gubler: the Unauthorized Documentary which he parodies Hollywood behavior, which are filmed while on the set of Criminal Minds. -
