Mary McLeod Bethune By lizbarbour May 9, 1865 End of the Civil War Jul 10, 1875 Mary McLeod Bethune was born. 1885 Mary starts attending a mission school. She had to walk 5 miles each day. 1894 Mary graduated from Scotia Seminary in Concord. 1897 Mary taught at the Haines Institute and organized the Mission Sabbath School. 1898 Mary married Albertus Bethune. 1899 Mary had a son, Albert Bethune. 1904 Mary began the Daytona Educational and Industrial Institute for African American girls. 1917 Mary became president of the Florida Federation of Colored Women. 1923 Mary combined her school with Cookman Institute to become the Bethune-Cookman College. 1932 Mary was named one of the fifty greatest women. 1935 Mary created the National Council of Negro Women. 1936 Mary become the director of the National Youth Administration. May 18, 1955 Mary McLeod Bethune died. Nov 19, 1968 Ms. Barbour was born.
