  • Birth

    Marie Tharp (Ypsilanti, 30 July 1920 – Nyack, 23 August 2006)
  • College Graduation

    He graduated from Ohio University in 1943 with bachelor's degrees in English and music and four minors. She later received a master's degree in geology from the University of Michigan before earning a degree in mathematics from Tulane University while working as a geologist for Standard Oil.

    He worked on the faculty of Columbia University until 1983, after which he undertook a map distribution business in South Nyack, New York during his retirement.
  • Marie Tharp and Maurice Ewing

    He moved to New York in 1948, where he obtained employment. With Maurice Ewing at the Lamont Geological Laboratory at Columbia University. There he met Heezen and in an early work together they used photographic data to locate military aircraft sunk during World War II.
  • First physiograph

    Tharp and Heezen published their first physiographic map of the North Atlantic in 1957. Collaborating with Austrian landscape painter Heinrich Berann
  • Topography of the ocean floor

    They began working together to map out the topography of the ocean floor.For the first eighteen years of their collaboration, Heezen collected data aboard the Observatory ship, the Vema, and Tharp mapped from that data, since women at that time were still excluded from work aboard ships. Prevented from bringing the investigation on board early in her career because of her gender
  • Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Atlantis

    He later joined the expedition that collected data in 1965. Tharp, independently used data collected from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's exploration ship Atlantis and seismographic data from underwater earthquakes. His work with Heezen represented the first systematic attempt to map the entire ocean floor.
  • Map of the entire ocean floor

    They published their map of the entire ocean floor in 1977 (which coincided with Heezen's death year).Although for a time Heezen favored the terrestrial expansion hypothesis, under Tharp's direction he switched to the alternative theories of plate tectonics and continental drift.
  • Medalla Hubbard

    Reason: Creation of the first scientific map of the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean
  • Society of Woman Geographers Outstanding Achievement Award

    Reason: Marguerite Harrison, Blair Niles, Gertrude Shelby and Gertrude Emerson Sen. These recognized explorers wanted to bring together women who shared ambitions and interests in exploration and achievement, exchange knowledge derived from fieldwork, and encourage women to undertake geographic exploration and research. In naming their organization Society of Women Geographers, the founders intended the word "geographer" in its broadest sense.
  • Mary Sears Woman Pioneer in Oceanography Award

    In 2002, Mary Wilcox Silver was honored as the first recipient of the Woman Pioneer in Oceanography Award named for Mary Sears. The award goes to: “A woman who has provided significant scientific leadership in understanding our marine environment and has provided inspiration and/or opportunity for other women in marine sciences.
  • Death

    He died of cancer in Nyakk, New York.
