  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    Started by both American and British officials in order to break the blockade on all highway and rail routes to west Berlin. The Berlin Airlift successfully kept Berlin alive and delivered food, various supplies and even presents on Christmas to aid Berlin. The Berlin Airlift lasted for 327 days and landed every few minutes delivering millions of tons of supplies.

    NATO Forms
    Western Europe joined Canada and (for the first time in history) America in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization military alliance, during a time of peace. All the nations pledged military support to each other in case of an attack on any nation.
  • Korean War Starts

    South Korea was unexpectaedly attacked by North Korea. South Korea reached out to the United States for help. President Truman sent troops to Japan, Tawaiin, and China to help defend South Korea from the North Korean communists.

    The United stated won a race against the Soviet Union to create a hydrogen bomb. Ever since 1942 when the atomic bomb was dropped, scientists predicted they could create a more deadly thermonuclear weapon than the A-bomb.

    The Soviet Union feared they would be outnumbered once West Germany joined the NATO. The Soviets created the Warsaw Pact a military alliance and got seven Eastern European countries to join the pact.

    The first artificial satelite Sputnik, was successfully launched into space by the Soviet Union. The satellite had a diameter of 22.8 inches and weighed 183.9 lbs.

    Kennedy was determined to keep containment- prevent communisim from spreading anywhere outside it's borders. after an argument with Khrushchev, concrete was poured and topped with barbed wire and the Berlin Wall was born, Separating the communist half in Germany.

    Khrushchev the Soviet Premier, promised to defend Cuba, during the summer, weapons were sent to Cuba and America noticed. Kennedy voiced a warning that the U.S. would not tolerate nuclear weapons in Cuba because they could easily hit states within a few minutes.

    Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev both signed the treaty, agreeing to a limiting the number ntercontinental missles, submarine missiles for 5 years in an attempt to control nuclear power.

    Quickly became a popular Soviet leader.Tried to introduce a political proccesses to the Soviet Union, established the Congress on People's Duties which people elected by seret ballot. He improved political oppression and pushed for reform. He resigned when the Soviet Union fell.

Reagan didn't want the Soviet Union to gain more nuclear power than the U.S. President Reagan and Gorbachev chose the ntermediate-Range Nuclear Forces landmark agreement and created the foundation for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty,

    Once communists stopped enforcing the one- party rule in europe, Europe war no longer divided by communism.

    The Kremlin in Moscow removed the Soviet flag and declared they were now independent and would now have a Commonwealth for Independent States. Many states had already decided to break away from the Soviet Union, which was now small and weak. The fall of communism led to relief for the U.S. and open doors for Europe.

    The Treaty on European Union was signed and established the European Union, which was established due to the fall of communism. The treaty created common market, strengthened demicratic legitimacy, established a foreign and security policy.

    Al Qaeda Attacked the United States
    Two American airline planes were highjacked by Al Qaeda terrorists and crashed into the Twin Towers located in New York, killing thousands. Another American plane was highjacked and crashed into the Pentagon. The last plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, killing it's passengers. These attacks changed America's security and affected the lives of thousands.

    United States Invaded Iraq
    President Bush declared war on Iraq due to suspicion that their dictator Saddam Hussein, planned to use weapons of mass destruction. The U.S. bombed and disarmed parts of Iraq. May 1 the invasion was over but insurgency continued into an intense guerrilla war, resulting in thousands of coalition military and the deaths of citizens.
