    -Britain pulled their troops out before Germany could attack them, Miracle of Dunkirk

    -Largest sustained bombing campaign
    -Britain's air force managed to keep back Germany's Luftwaffe
    -Their victory saved the people from the possibility of a German ground invasion
    -Both countries suffered heavy losses
    -Seemed like the Germans had the advantage for a while
    Britain's air force managed to defeat Germany's air force without France and saved their country from the possibility of Germany occupying their country.
  • Battle of Leningrad

    September 8th 1941- January 27th 1944
    -Siege lasted almost 900 days
    -Germany invaded the Soviet Union and surrounded Leningrad
    -Soviets held up against German forces
    -Used a road across a frozen lake to get supplies into troops and rescue people
    -German forces became so weak that Soviets were able to rise up and drive them away
    Germany tried to take the city of Leningrad but the Soviets held up and pushed the Germans away but suffered many casualties.

    -Turned the war in favor of the Allies
    -Soviets defended the city of Stalingrad against Germany
    -One of the bloodiest battles in history
    -Kept Germany out of Soviet Russia
    -Soviets surrounded the German army
    The Soviets were able to keep Germany from advancing too far into Soviet Russia in one of the deadliest battles in history which helped turn the tide of the war to their side.
  • Operation Torch

    -First time Britain and U.S. had worked together on an invasion plan
    -Some didn't feel strong enough to attack Germany by France
    -Roosevelt overruled his military officials to support Churchill
    -Churchill and Roosevelt wanted to attack French North Africa
    -Some of the French resisted them when they landed
    Britain and the U.S. worked together for the first time on an invasion plan to take French North Africa.
  • D-Day

    June 6 1944, Battle of Normandy ended August 1944
    -Its code name was Operation Overlord
    -Allies did a lot of work to make Germany think they would be invading Pas-de-Calais
    -It was delayed 24 hours because of bad weather
    -Approximately 4,000 allied troops died on the D-Day invasion
    -People said it was the beginning of the end of the war
    The Allied forces drove German forces out of Eastern Europe and liberated France from their control.

    -Hitler wanted to split the Allied forces
    -Allies left the Ardennes with little defense
    -Small group of soldiers helped buy time for other troops
    -The line at the allied front took on a bulge shape
    -Germans had a shortage of fuel and American troops fought hard so they lost
    It was the deadliest battle fought by the U.S. army but Germany was pushed back.

    -Last major battle in World War II
    -Resulted in the surrender of Germany and death of Hitler
    -Soviets defeated German forces surrounding the city and then advanced in
    -Heaving bombing
    -Many people died
    Final major battle of the war where Soviets attacked Berlin which resulted in Germany's surrender.
