Sachar was born in East Meadow, New York.
His father worked at the Empire State Building in New York. -
At the age of nine, Sachar moved to California, where he remembers having fights with oranges as ammo.

While attending college, Sachar worked as a teacher aide at Hillside Elementary. He supervised recess, and the kids called him "Louis the Yard Teacher," who became a character in the Wayside School books.

Sachar wrote his first book in nine months. It was published as he was beginning law school.

Sachar graduated from law school and worked as a lawyer until his books sold enough that he was able to write full-time.

During these years, Sachar published several books including Someday Angeline (1983), Sixth Grade Secrets (1987), and There's a Girl in the Boys Bathroom (1987).

Carla Askew was an elementary school counselor and became the inspiration for the counselor in There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom.

As an adult, Sherre works as a zookeeper.

Sachar says that Holes was one of his most challenging books to write because of the number of characters in the story. Holes won the National Book Award the year it was published.
