Frodo and Gandalf are introduced to the reader. Frodo receives the magical Ring from Bilbo.

Gandalf tells Frodo he must leave the Shire with the Ring. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out.

Frodo is stabbed by a ringwraith and nearly dies. The wound continues to hurt him and cause damage.

Frodo is healed by Elrond at Rivendell. He is then accompanied by a dwarf, an elf, his three hobbit friends, two humans, and Gandalf, a wizard.

The fellowship travels a while. They are attacked at some point and Frodo and Sam are separated.

The ring is weighing heavily on Frodo. He can barely resist its power. He is stabbed and poisoned by the giant spider Shelob but somehow lives.

Frodo, having survived the venom, eventually recovers and can wal, but is tempted by the ring. He makes it to the top and by a twist of fate, Smeagol bites off the finger with the ring and it falls into the fires of Mount Doom.

Frodo and Sam escape Mordor on the eagles. Frodo returns home with the rest of the hobbits. They rebuild the shire. Frodo sails west over the Great Sea because he was a ring bearer to live with the elves.

Sam, having carried the ring for a short time, lives out his life until he sees fit to head West as well with Frodo. The story ends.
