John Locke was born on August 29th, 1632 in England. He lived to become one of the most influential people in England and the most influential people of the 17th century.

He thought that the purpose of government was to protect the natural rights of its citizens. He said that natural rights were life, liberty and property, and that all people automatically earned these simply by being born.

In 1652-1664, after studying philosophy, medicine, law and mathematics and graduating with multiple degrees, Locke becomes a very important professor at Oxford College.

Locke who is now Lord Ashley's personal physician supervises a liver operation that saves Lord Ashley's life and remarkably he lives another 15 years.

Locke's writes his first draft of the essay concerning human understanding, in it are ideas on natural law; based partially on the writing of others.

Locke had many friends who were nobles in government and also highly respected scholars. He was good friends with the Earl of Shaftesbury and he was given government jobs which he served with Shaftesbury.In 1679 his friend Earl was tried for treason. Earl decided to flee England to escape further persecution.

Because of his close association with the Earl, Locke also fled to Holland in 1683.

Locke's ideas about revolution against a government are linked to a plot to kill the king. Locke flees to Holland, many that agree with him and Lord Ashley are arrested for treason and some are killed.

He returned to England in about 1688 when William and Mary were invited to retake the reign of England in what historians call the Bloodless Revolution.
Locke wrote and developed the philosophy that there was no legitimate government under the divine right of kings theory. -
