    Thomas Jefforson ahd sent confidential message to Congress regarding the Lewis and Clark's expedition. The message purported to focus on the state of Indian trade and mentioned the proposed western expedition. This message was sent in secret to aviod the political enemies of Thomas Jefferson

    The corps held the first Independence day in the west of Missisppi River
  • Death of a member

    Sergeant Charles Floyd dies of natural causes near present-day Sioux City, Iowa. This was the only memeber that died during the journey. Since this death didn't happen from attack or disease, it shows the the expedition was safe from outer sources
  • Averting the conflict with the chief

    The Corps has a tense encounter with the Teton Sioux near today's Pierre, South Dakota. Fortunately one of the Sioux chiefs waves his men off and the conflict was averted. To the expedition, it was such a relief.
  • The coldest weather

    The men record the temperature at 45 degrees below zero, "colder than they ever knew it to be in the States."
  • The birth of Sacajawea's son

    Sacagawea's son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau—nicknamed Pompy by Clark—is born with assistance from Lewis. She was pregnant the journey but se safely gives the birth to her son.
  • Making the choice of their life

    The Corps reaches an unknown fork in the Missouri and must determine which branch to choose.
  • Discover that there is no Northwest Passage

    Jefferson receives the shipment from Fort Mandan; Lewis finds the headwaters of the Missouri River, then crosses the Continental Divide and Lemhi Pass to discover that there is no Northwest Passage.
  • Reaching the Columbia River

    The expedition reaches the Columbia River, the last waterway to the Pacific Ocean. Even though the expedition couldn't find the river that connected the whole east and west territory, this discovery was significant.
