    President Thomas Jefferson has gone to Congress to obtain consent to fund an expedition to the new lands to the west. President Jefferson gathers a group of men and chooses his childhood friend Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead the expedition. He spends $2,500 dollars to fund the expedition. On February 28, 1803, the group, called the Corps od Disciovery set out from St. Louis Missouri.

    Charles Floyd falls ill and the company stops in hope that he recovers soon.

    Charles Floyd passes away on this day. He is buried upon a hilltop which is named Floyd's Bluff.

    During the expedition, the group encountered many different types of animals. There were buffalo, praire dogs, antelope, coyotes, and mule deer.

    The Corps encounter a band with a group of Sioux Indians and almost get into a fight over a boat.
  • Peaceful trade with the Indians

    Peaceful trade with the Indians
    The group was able to trade with the Pawnee and Cheyenne Indians for tobacco.
  • Fort Mandan

    Lewis and Clarks along with their group stayed at a fort called Fort Mandan over the winter of 1804.

    A baby is born and Lewis tries to make the birth go quickly by giving Sacagewea crushed rattlesnake rattle powder.

    The group encounter Sacagewea's home tribe, the Shoshone Indians. They meet the Indains and find that Sacagewea's brother is the chief.

    It starts to snow heavily as the entire group attempst to cross the Bitterroot Mountains. Patrick Gass described these mountains as the most terrible mountains he had ever beheld.

    Fort Clatsop
    Lewis and Clark along with their group of men stayed at Fort Clatsop over the winter of 1805.

    The groups tobacco supply has been emptied so, the group uses crab tree bark as a substitute.
  • Help comes from the local Indians

    Help comes from the local Indians
    The Nez Percè provided food for the Corps of Discovery during this time. They were a friendly that was more than happy to lend aid.
  • Indian trouble

    Indian trouble
    The group woke up to find the Blackfeet Indian tribe trying to steal their guns and horses. A fight broke out where two of the Indain men lost their lives.
