Levi was born in Buttenheim Germany on February 26, 1829

Levi came to America to work for his brother's dry good business.

Levi moved out west to San Francisco where he started his own business. Levi ran his own wholesale dry good company. He sold clothing, fabric, and etc to mining trades.

In 1890 the business name started to be Levi Strauss & Co.

One of Levi's customers (Jacob Davis) came in and asked Levi to pay the fee to secure a patent for his design. Jacob's design used metal rivets on pockets and the fly seam to help resist wear and tear.

Both Strauss and Davis was granted the patent, so they can start making their product.

In 1875 Levi bought the Mission and Pacific Woolen Mills so he could expand his business.

In 1880, Levi gave about 6 million dollars to charities and special funds for orphans.

Levi never got married, or had childeren, So the only person that was close to him in his family was his nephew. When Levi died, the business was handed down to his nephew Jacob Stern. Jacob took over the business as the new company president.

Levi died at the age of 73 in San Francisco on September 26, 1902
