On this day in the Hillary family there was a new child. His name was Edmund Percival Hillary. No one knew what he going to grow up and be. He was born in Auckland.

Though Edmund conquers Everest on this day, it was overshadowed by the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The English took this as a coronation gift for a "English Man". He was soon knighted for this achievment

Just seven days after conquering Everest, Edmund comes down to the foot of the mountain to a warm welcoming and the new title of Sir to his name. Edmund being the kiwi he was hadn't celebrated the success until he had reached the foot of the mountain, so he was kind of surprised.

Sir Edmund establishes the Himalayan trust which is building hospitals, schools and many other types of buildings all throughout Nepal.

Sir Edmund Hillary established the Hillary Institute with the “Goal of recognising, rewarding and nurturing great leaders currently in play, who will provide answers to such challenges as climate change, poverty, disease, peace and justice” Sir Edmund Hillary. In 2007, the year before he died.

Edmund has at least three schools named after him. Two in Auckland and one in Johannesburg. He built a very strong relationship between NZ and Nepal which will forever be remembered.
