Joseph Bates was born the 8th July 1792. His mother was the daughter of Mrs. Barnabas Rye and was named Theldosia Bates. His father's name isn't known.

The exact day isn't known but on June 1807, Joseph made his first boat trip.

The exact date isn't (once again) known but in 1810 he was kidnapped to serve the british NAVY.

On April 17th 1815, he was rleased from Darkmoor with 200 prisonners and he was assigned to the british ship for his trip back home.

On the 15th February 1818, he married Prudence M. Nye, daughter of captain Obed Nye.
