    Jonah Disobeys the Lord (Refusal)

The Lord called Jonah to go and prophesy to the people of Nineveh. God wanted Jonah to tell them that He would destroy their city if they did not show repentance for their sins. Hoping to escape his prophetic calling, Jonah fled by sea on a ship. To punish him for his disobedience, God created a giant storm to put a wrench in Jonah’s escape plan (Keathley).

Jonah Gets Eaten by a Fish (Punishment)

After the storm hit, Jonah was thrown overboard by the sailors on the ship, and God sent a huge fish (presumably a whale) to swallow him. He was inside the fish’s stomach for three days and three nights (Maxey).

    Jonah's Prayer (Remorse)

Jonah prayed to God for forgiveness as he sat in the fish’s stomach. He wanted Him to save him like He had saved him in previous situations. Even though Jonah didn't necessarily deserve it, God forgave his sins, and the fish threw up Jonah on the beach (Keathley).

    Jonah Talks to Nineveh (Obedience)

After God saved Jonah from the fish, he decides to obey God and he goes to warn the Nineveh of coming destruction. Even though Jonah didn’t have much energy or force behind his warnings, the people still believed him and repented to the Lord (Jonah Biblical Figure).

Jonah Becomes Angry (God’s lesson/Jonah’s disappointment)

Jonah was angry after God spared Nineveh because he hated them. God would erase their sins if they showed repentance, but Jonah didn’t believe they deserved to even get a chance to show it. After Jonah left, God made a plant that made Jonah really happy but the plant’s death left Jonah distraught. God answered Jonah’s anger by asking him a question to show His view: Why shouldn't I show compassion for the Ninevites when you show compassion for only a plant (New American Standard Bible, Jon. 4)?
