He was born on August 21, 1820 in Leighlinbridge, Carlow County (Ireland).

His experiments with the scattering of light rays by colloidal suspensions resulted in the phenomenon called the Tyndall effect. The Tindall effect is scattering of a beam of light by a medium containing small suspended particles.

Tyndall also made important observations on the structure and movement of glaciers. He discovered the re-ice phenomenon, thanks to which he described the march of the glaciers.

He refuted the theory of spontaneous generation by visually demonstrating that dust carried microorganisms. He also demonstrated that in the absence of dust the culture media remained sterile, even if they were directly exposed to air.
