    While his time at Cambridge, Polkinghorne published multiple books on quantum mechanics. "He published An identity for the S matrix for a finite time interval, Renormalization of the transformation operators of quantum electrodynamics, and Normal products of Heisenberg operators."(University of St Andrews 2008). His research help to find the discovery of quarks. According to Live Science, quarks are the smallest observable subatomic particle.

    In 1977 Dr. John Polkinghore deciding to add another prefix to his name, Reverand. According to the University of St Andrews, he became ordained with the Church of England. He spoke on his career change say, "I didn't leave science because I was disillusioned, but felt I'd done my bit for it after about twenty-five years... Since Christianity had always been central to my life, the idea of testing my vocation and seeking ordination seemed a suitable second career."
