    John Paul Jones was born in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, on the coast of Solway Firth. His father was John Paul Jones Sr. and his mother was Jean McDuff.

He became an apprentice on the ship "Friendship", on this ship it is precieved that he visited the United States for the first time. Visiting his brother in VIrgina. Also, once this voyage with the "Friendship" was over he sailed as the thrd mate on the slave ship "King George"

    John Paul Jones got his first prestigous job aboard the ship "Two Friends" which docked in Jamaica. This ship was responsible for the transportation of slaves.

    While sailing on the ship "John", John Paul Jones was suddenly thrusted into the captain position when the captain and first mate died of yellow fever. This was the first time John Paul Jones was the captain of a ship. He was only 21 years old!

    John Paul Jones was accused of beating one of his shipmates, so he gained the reputation of being a cruel and violent captain. Jones was later accused of killing the man when he died a few weeks later. Jones was sent to jail, but was quickly released on bail. Due to these accusations, Jones fled to America. Which just so happened to be precisley the time the U.S. navy was established.

    Despite having the best sea record in the navy, Jones is ranked 18th in the nation in naval captains. This was kind of upsetting to Jones, which forced him to try even harder.

    Jones was appointed to the commander of the Ranger and sailed to France in November. There he meets ambassador Benjamin Franklin.

    While in France, Jones receives command of the ship "Bonhomme Richard" he brought in 380 crew members with only 75 Americans and a mixture of British, Scotch, Irish, and Portuguese soldiers.

    Jones is given command of the ship "Alliance" and sails back to France. By now to many he was considered a hero in French society. While in France he is responsible for taking care of over 500 prisoners of war.

    After the United States refused to give Jones a pay increase, he sailed to France as a "Prize Agent" to gain money from his previous battles. He will countinue to spend many years in France where he coutinues to demand more and more money for him and his crew.

    John Paul Jones sails back to the United States to try and become a higher rank, the U.S. Declines his offer. The Russians here about this and offer him a job that he could not refuse.

    John Paul Jones arrives in Russia hoping to gain the rank of Rear Admirial with total naval power. Jones quickly realizes that the Russian navy was in very poor shape and was too much for him to handle. After the Russians do not pay him in an appropriate time frame, Jones resigns.

    Jones Returns to France where he is offered the position of military commisioner by George Washington. Unfortunatley, Jones becomes very sick and is unable to accept the prestigous offer.

    John Paul Jones dies in paris at the age of 45 due to being very ill during the time of the French Revolution. His body is sent back to the U.S. and currently is stationed in the U.S. Naval acdemy in Maryland.
