General Macquarie ordered Oxley to explore the Lachlan River. He mapped the River until swamps blocked his way and returned back to Bathurst.

Oxley led a course to trace the Macquarie River. He was blocked by swamps again and explored the Castlereagh River and found the Liverpool Plains. He crossed the Great Dividing Range, found the Hastings River and named Port Macquarie.

Convicts needed a new place to settle and in 1823 Oxley sailed up the coast to Moreton Bay. He was shown a large river by some escaped convicts who were living with the local Aboriginal people. He named this river the Brisbane River.

Oxley became a farmer and a sheep breeder. He was a Director of the Bank of New South Wales and a member of parliament.
