Very little is known about British philosopher John Dupre aside from his birthday and his British citizenship which were both kept from the public for quite some time.

John Dupre received his Ph.D. in philosophy during his time at Cambridge University in 1981. During the years 1982 to 1996, Dupre spent his time as a member of The Department of Philosophy at Stanford University. Dupre is currently a professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Exeter.

In his book Disorder of Things: Metaphysical Foundations of the Disunity of Science", Dupre presents a compelling case against reductionism. He then sets the foundation for his later work.
