John Dupre received his bachelor degree in philosophy, politics and economics, which is an interdisciplinary degree which combines study from three disciplines.

Dupre obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1981 from Cambridge University.

John Dupre publish his first book in 1993 called The Disorder of Things. Metaphysical foundations of the disunity of science. It articulates a non-reductive, indeterministic, and pluralistic metaphysics, and argues that this is much better suited to understanding contemporary science, especially biology, than is the monistic physicalism assumed by most contemporary philosophers of science.

Taught in the Philosophy Dept at Stanford University for 10 years before returning to the UK in 1996

After returning to the UK Dupre became a researcher at Exeter University. He also taught philosophy and help create more degrees to be offered in philosophy.

In 2002 Dupre became full director of Egenis Centre for Genomics in Society. As director he mentored and help guided many students through their PhD studies.

In 2019 Dupre became the president of the Philosophy of Science Association. He continues to publish papers in journals on the philosophy of science.
