Lakatos was born on November 9, 1922 in Debrecen, Hungary.

In 1944, Lakatos graduated from the University of Debrecen with degrees in physics, mathematics, and philosophy. However, the celebration was to be short lived. Not long after the Germans invaded Hungary. During the years after the invasion he was part of a Marxist resistance movement.

In 1961, after Lakatos fled the Soviet Invasion of Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution, he made his way to England where he obtained his PhD in philosophy from Cambridge University. While he had degrees in Physics and Mathematics his true love seemed to be philosophy.
