John Dewey (1859—1952)

  • John Dewey, Born: October 20, 1859

    1894, Dewey started to incorporate his theories with the ideas of Pragmatic. He first started doing this as at the University of Chicago. With his time in Chicago he worked on his first major work call The School and Society. This took place in 1899, and was based on laboratory school teachings, Dewey's belief was that hands on learning and exploring was the best way to learn. In 1899 he was also elected president of the American Physiological Association.

    Dewey moved to New York and brought his teachings to Columbia University. He spent the rest of his career at this University and retired in 1930. After Retirement he continue writing mainly in magazines such as "The New Republic" and "Nation". John Dewey also had many contributions toward woman's suffrage and took a great stand on efforts towards the formation of the teachers union.

    Later in Life he had many successes with his total work in writing adding up to 40 books and 700 articles in various journals. He died of phenomena at the age of 92. Today he is considered to be one of the top contributors to American Pragmatism. His overall view on life was that life is nor good or bad but relates to the amount of Human effort put into it. All in all Dewey is a significant forefather of the educational thinking world we have today.
