During this year Polkinghorne received a doctorate in theoretical elementary particle physics. With this knowledge as well as his degrees in both mathematics and quantum field theory, Polkinghorne created models to help calculate quantum particle paths. Polkinghorne’s models allowed him to be selected into the Royal Society, which is the oldest national scientific society in the world.

From the World of Science to the World of Religion

During this time Polkinghorne felt that his research was compete and he shocked his colleagues when he resigned from his Royal Society post. Even more surprising he became very involved in Christianity and became ordained within the church. Polkinghorne’s time with the church helped form and solidify his eventual beliefs that both science and God shouldn’t be separated. Polkinghorne’s views in this area will go on to make him one of the more controversial and influential scientists in the 20th century.

The International Society for Science and Religion

Throughout his life Polkinghorne contributed a great amount to the belief of combining science and religion. In particular Polkinghorne was the founding president of the International Society for Science and Religion. The ISSR aims to pursue the promotion of education through learning and research in the fields of science and religion as well as examine the relationship between science and religion.
