Johann was exiled from Mainz, Germany due to a raging power struggle between politicians and guilds in the city. He moved to Strasbourg where he engaged in crafts like gem cutting and he perfected small metal type.

In 1445, Gutenberg completed his 42-line Bible called the Gutenberg Bible. They made 180 copies, and most were on paper.

In 1448, Gutenberg moved back to Mainz, and by 1450 he was operating a print shop.

Still living in Mainz, it is believed that Gutenberg went blind in the last months of his life. He died on February 3, 1468, and was buried in the church of the Franciscan convent in the nearby town of Eltville, Germany.
