Jimmy Carter

  • TIME Man of the Year

    TIME Man of the Year
Every year, TIME magazine chose one person to be the "Man of the year", being someone who had made significant contributions to society in a positive way. TIME magazine described Carter as "...complex and sometimes contradictory. His creed combines traditionally antithetical elements of help-the-deprived populism and deny-thyself fiscal conservatism." This was before he was inaugurated into office as president, so this choice was made with his accomplishments outside of his presidency in mind.
  • Cutting Off Argentina and Brazil

    Cutting Off Argentina and Brazil
Carter believed massively in human rights during his time as president, which led to him cutting off Argentina and Brazil from military aid. While the US had good relations with both countries, the two of them treated their own citizens terribly, violating Carter's human rights belief. In response, he cut off both countries.
  • Created the Bureau of Human Rights in the State Department

Created the Bureau of Human Rights in the State Department
Carter's approach to foreign policy was doing what he believed was best for human rights. It's why he cut off military funding to Brazil and Argentina, and he continued this approach by creating the Bureau of Human Rights. This department strives to advance democracy and freedom in and outside of the United States, and still exists today.
  • Panama Canal Treaties

    Panama Canal Treaties
Panama had resented the US for decades, ever since the US had gained control of the Panama Canal, but Carter signed two treaties to make peace with them. The first gave full ownership of the Panama Canal over to Panama, and the second put the Panama Canal on full neutrality. This ended up improving relations between the US and Latin America.
  • National Energy Act

    National Energy Act
In an attempt to lower strict oil prices due to the Oil Embargo on the US, Carter introduced the National Energy Act, which put a tax on "gas-guzzling" cards in order to discourage using so much gas. This ended up easing the dependence on foreign oil by 1979.
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
The Camp David Accords created a framework of an agreement of peace between Israel and Egypt. Organized by the U.S. and Jimmy Carter, it was a step to try and create more peace in the Middle East despite many countries in the area having tense relations with Israel, and by extension the United States that put so much into making Israel as powerful as it is.
  • SALT II Treaty

    SALT II Treaty
The SALT II Treaty was originally supported by Carter, as it limited the amount of strategic weapons and nuclear missile launchers that the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. were permitted to create. He signed this agreement in Vienna, Austria, alongside Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev. Carter had actually delayed this agreement in his prioritization of human rights, since he didn't agree with the USSR's policies. The agreement later died, but Carter was still able to negotiate with the USSR.
