    John gets injured at Stone River, Tenessee and was hospitalized. This is also when he started writing his dear friend in New York Mary L. Merrick.
  • Dear Mary L. Merrick

    On May fourth John Knapp wrote a letter to Miss Mary L. Merrick. a dear friend of his. Telling her how it is where he is living, Such as there are 25 hospitals, and all of the great soldiers.
  • Thank you for writing back

    John Kanapp wrote a dear friend back. Letting her know how much he appreciated the letter that he had recieved from her. Concidering that he doesnt get very many letters very often and wished to get more from more of his friends. He also lets her know a little bit of what it feels like being a soldier and not getting many letters from friends and family.
  • John Kanapps desire to farm.

    John writes his dear friend Mary. L Merrick back letting her know how he is doing and hopes for his hand to get better so as it is his desire to go to farming as soon as his term of service expires. Telling her in her next letter to let him know how she likes it in the city and how she likes the young folks there as well as how you like Henry Kinzey's wife.

    John Kanapp wrote his dear friend Mary back letting her know that he got her letter on the 10th and he is now in reasonalble health and feeling alot better compared to how he was feeling.

    John Kanapp wrote his dear friend Mary L. Merrrick saying that he moved from Nashville and is now in Tenessee with Major H.D.Hatton Surgeon.
  • Poor soldiers suffering

    John wrote his dear friend back once again. Saying this time, many poor soldiers are now suffering from wounds resived at Chicamauga and Mission Ridge. He thinks he wants to try home a while first and if the country needs his services as much as they did when he first enlisted then he will join the army once again.
  • Mary L. Merrick has changed

    John Kanapp wrote his dear friend Mary L. Merrick a letter back letting her know that he got her letter and once again he is glad to hear from her and loved her photo very much. He was listing all of the things that he likes about her and all of the things that have changed since he last seen her.
  • Sickness

    John Kanapp wrote his friend back. Again. Just talking about the things that happen where he lives and about all of the sickness that is going on. But, he is getting better. He said to his dear friend Mary that where there are so many people to gather they are liable to catch disease.
  • Summer

    The letter was saying how John is starting to get sick again. And they think that the summer there is going to be bad and lost of sickness going around. There are a bunch of dead animals laying around everywhere you go.
  • Weather

    John wrote his dear friend as always and telling her how great it makes him feel to recieve a letter back from her. He was also talking about how his health is doing. He said that he wants to do some late visiting next fall if he is to live. He thinks he can enjoy it after being deprived of it for all of those years.

    John Kanapp wrote the same dear friend that he always writes Mary. L Merrick. John is now living in Richmond. The letter this time was about him having a headache caused by the hot weather. They have had hot weather in Richmond for about a month now. He says that they are also having some showers and seems to be progressing well there and at Richmond it is rather encouraging. In his opinion he says It looks as though this civil war would soon come to a close.
    John also wants to do schooling.
  • John Kanapp is getting sick again

    Someone that is in war with John wrote Mary L. Merrick back letting her know how John is doing. He is starting to get sick again. He says that a change in climate would do alot of good for him and the others that are sick. He said in the letter that there is so much sickness going on caused by the weather his exact words were "Every day how I wish I had studied surgery before I came into the army and I wanted to when I was about 20."
  • Coming home

    John is coming home. He is expecting to be home by the 15th if he can. He is very anxious to meet his dear friend Marys mother. He also talks about the weather again and how warm it is but there is showers mostly everyday. He tells Mary to send her next letter to Elkhart, Indiana.
