On Broadway, she won a Tony Award for her performance as Blanche Dubois in the original Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire in 1948.

Despite her illnesses and age she continued working to appear to great acclaim in films such as Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Used People (1992), and Nobody’s Fool (1994). For their contributions to the arts, Tandy and Hume received the Kennedy Center Honor in 1986. -
Nobody's Fool (1994) proved to be her last performance, at the age of 84.
