    Bruce Jenner set a world record of 8,617 points and won gold for the Americans at the Montreal Olympics. He beat the world record holder and 1972 Olypmic Champion from the Soviet Union by almost 300 points. This was his last decathalon and soon appeared in commericals, movies, and a Wheaties cereal box.

    On September 11, it was the deadliest day in history for New York City because of al-Qaeda’s terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. 19 militants hijacked four air planes and two were flown into the World Trade Center towers, killing over 3,000 and injuring over 10,000 people. This caused the collapse of the Twin Towers. The third plane hit the Pentagon with causalities of about 200 and the fourth plane crashed in a Pennsylvania field, killing 45 people.

    The 2012 Summer Olympics were held in London, with 26 different sports, from July 27 to August 12. It is the most famous international multi-sport event involving about 10,500 men and women athletes, following the traditions of the ancient Olympic Games. Michael Phelps won his 22nd medal for the American Swim team and the U.S. went home with 104 medals. This was the first time in history in which every sport had female competitors.
