Jay Gatsby goes to war.

Nick meets Gatsby at one of his parties and Nick didn't even know he was having a conversation with Gatsby when they met.
" 'I'm Gatsby,' he said suddenly.
'What!' I exclaimed. 'Oh I beg your pardon.'
'I thought you know, old sport. I'm afraid I'm not a very good host.' " page: 52 -
Gatsby comes back from the war after 5 years and moves to West Egg and starts to fall inlove with Daisy again.
"Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. when i looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished....." page; 26 -
Gatsby is still inlove with Daisy when he comes back from the war, so he moves close to her.

Daisy comes to Gatsy's house and that's the only reason Gatsby has been having the parties.
